SARA Disclosure--Master of Science in School Counseling

NNU's Master of Science in Counseling: School Counseling Major is nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).  Students enrolled in the School Counseling program complete 60 credit hours of coursework over eight semesters (33 months), 1,000 hours of practicum/internship experience, pass the national comp exam, and sit for the National Counselor Examination (NCE).

Upon graduation, School Counseling majors are prepared to apply to become a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Idaho. Graduates are also qualified for the Idaho Department of Education Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Certification. The PPS certification is broadly portable to most other U.S. states and territories because of reciprocal agreements made between states via the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC).

Prospective students from outside the state of Idaho can use the table below to begin to investigate whether an NNU degree is right for them. As they do this due diligence, they should keep two things in mind: 1) each jurisdiction will likely have very specific state requirements that an applicant for a professional license must meet beyond the educational requirements; and 2) as a general rule it will be beneficial to a candidate to pursue formal licensure in Idaho and then apply to another state with that credential in hand. This table is made in good faith, but requirements change, and it is incumbent upon the student to research certification/licensure laws in their states of interest. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) is an excellent source for reviewing State Certification Requirements across the US.
